What New York State and federal rules say

  • The state Department of Labor requires an Accessibility Lift Technician License for accessibility lift work, though an Elevator Accessibility Technician License may stand in for work restricted to accessibility platform lifts.
  • Labor Law Article 33 covers platform lifts and non-residential stairway chairlifts, and it lists stairway chairlifts for private residences among the equipment it excludes.
  • Article 33's elevator accessibility technician license is restricted to platform lifts, including those in private residences, and calls for at least three years of verified work constructing, maintaining and repairing such lifts.
  • Article 33's licensing rules do not apply to owners or lessees working on a conveyance in their own private residence, but anyone hired for that work must comply with the article.

In Suffolk County

  • Railings are on Suffolk Consumer Affairs' list of home improvement work, alongside roofing, siding, and storms and screens.
  1. 1Step 1For railings on a ramp or stairs, search the installer's Home Improvement License in Suffolk's License and Complaint Violation Look Up.
  2. 2Step 2For a lift, the state Department of Labor's elevator licensing page lists the license types, including the Elevator Accessibility Technician License.

In Nassau County

  • Elevator Service/Install and Stairs & Railings are both categories on Nassau's home improvement license application.
  1. 1Step 1Nassau's Valid Business License Search checks whether a ramp, railing or lift contractor holds a valid county license.
  2. 2Step 2For lift work near a Nassau home, the elevator licensing page from the state Department of Labor names the license types, the Elevator Accessibility Technician License among them.

Towns with a license of their own

  • Town of Shelter Island: Shelter Island's notice to contractors says every contractor or subcontractor working on the island, landscapers included, needs a town license.

Beyond the license

  • Ask for a certificate of insurance sent to you by the insurer, naming you as the certificate holder.
  • Ask who files the permit and books the inspections, and get it in the contract.
  • Get the price, the scope, the start and finish dates and the payment schedule in a written contract.
