Village and city permit offices on Long Island

If your house sits inside an incorporated village or a city, that government is often where a building permit starts, not the town. These lists come from the two counties' own pages.

Suffolk County village halls, by town

Suffolk County lists these village halls. Call the hall to ask whether the village issues its own building permits for your street. Riverhead has no incorporated village on the county's list.

Questions homeowners ask

Does my village issue its own building permits?

A village can run its own building department: the Town of North Hempstead's department, for example, covers only the unincorporated areas of the town. Call your village hall to ask; Nassau County tells residents to call their city, town or village directly.

How do I know which village my house is in?

If you pay village taxes, you live in an incorporated village. Revival's request form also checks your street address against U.S. Census records, which name any village.
