Find a licensed electrician on Long Island
What electricians do
An electrician installs and repairs wiring, panels and service, circuits, outlets and lighting, and hooks up equipment such as generators, heat pumps and EV chargers.
- Breakers that trip often, or outlets that spark or feel warm.
- An older panel, or service too small for new equipment.
- New circuits for a kitchen, a heat pump, a generator or an EV charger.
- A renovation that moves or adds wiring.
Who licenses electricians on Long Island
- The state's Division of Building Standards and Codes does not handle electrician licensing, but licensing for electricians who install security and fire alarm systems goes through the Department of State.
- When an electrician is paid for work that disturbs painted surfaces in a pre-1978 home, the EPA's lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule requires certification.
Suffolk County
- Master Electrician and Restricted Electrical are both license types issued by Suffolk County Consumer Affairs.
- Every master and restricted electrician licensed in Suffolk must complete the continuing education hours the county requires.
- Suffolk's combined master license application, which covers electrical and plumbing, asks for documented proof of 7 of the last 10 years with a licensed employer in the field.
- Applicants for a Suffolk master electrical license pay a non-refundable $200.00 application fee.
Nassau County
- According to Nassau County Consumer Affairs, electricians operating in the county get their licenses from its cities, towns and villages.
- An electrician acting only within the scope of a current electrical license is outside Nassau's home improvement license law.

Town by town
Each town page quotes that town's own rules for electrical work, with the date we read them.
| Town or city | County | What the town says |
|---|---|---|
| Town of Oyster Bay | Nassau County | Oyster Bay needs an electrical certificate of approval from a Town-approved inspector before a certificate of occupancy or completion. |
| City of Glen Cove | Nassau County | Any electrical service change or repair in Glen Cove calls for a City permit. |
| City of Long Beach | Nassau County | Electrical jobs in Long Beach need a City permit. |
| Town of Babylon | Suffolk County | Unpermitted electrical work in Babylon may need a Fire Underwriters Certificate before the structure is legal. |
| Town of Huntington | Suffolk County | Huntington does no electrical inspections; permitted work needs an authorized agency's certificate of approval. |
| Town of Smithtown | Suffolk County | Smithtown posts its electrical inspection agency list and closes electric-only permits when the agency certificate arrives. |
| Town of Riverhead | Suffolk County | A Suffolk County master electrical license is needed to sign Riverhead's electrical affidavit. |
| Town of Southampton | Suffolk County | Southampton electrical permits need a Suffolk County license number, and work done before applying pays double. |
| Town of Southold | Suffolk County | Electrical work done without a permit in Southold pays double inspection fees. |
| Town of Shelter Island | Suffolk County | On Shelter Island, rough electrical work needs an underwriter inspection as well as the town's. |
What it costs
Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island electricians earn a median $80,288 a year, from about $51,265 at entry level to $105,120 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)
Electrical prices turn on the panel and service the house has, how much wiring is new, how hard the walls and ceilings are to open, and the inspection the work needs. See the electrical cost guide.
What to ask before you hire
- Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
- A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
- Who files for the electrical inspection, and which inspection agency does the town accept?
- Does the panel or the utility service need an upgrade for what I want to add?
- Will I get the certificate of electrical inspection at the end of the job?
- What is in the price for patching walls and ceilings after wiring?
