What fence and deck builders do

Fence and deck builders install fences and gates, decks, railings and stairs. On Long Island the town or village sets the fence heights and decides which decks need a permit.

  • A new fence for privacy, a pool or a dog.
  • A new deck, or an old deck with soft boards or loose railings.
  • Stairs or railings that wobble.

Who licenses fence and deck builders on Long Island

Suffolk County

  • Suffolk's home improvement law names fencing and also reaches other improvements to structures or land that are part of residential property. A business doing that work needs a county license unless an exemption applies.
  • Fence and deck contractors who work in Suffolk without a license can face arrest and prosecution, according to Consumer Affairs.

Nassau County

  • Fences and railings are on Nassau County Consumer Affairs' list of who must be licensed.
  • Decks are one of the work categories on Nassau's home improvement business license application.
  • Nassau's code also counts other improvements to structures or land next to a dwelling as home improvement work.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island carpenters earn a median $78,841 a year, from about $54,732 at entry level to $97,440 with experience. Fence erectors earn a median $35,717 a year, from about $35,360 at entry level to $54,150 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Fence and deck prices turn on the length or the square footage, the material, the footings, the height of the deck off the ground, and the railings and stairs. See the fences and decks cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Do you have a current survey of my lot, so the fence stays on my side of the line?
  • What height and style does my town allow here, and does it need a permit?
  • For a pool: does the fence meet the pool barrier rules, gates included?
  • For a deck: who files the permit, and how are the footings and the ledger attached?
