Find a licensed flooring installer on Long Island
What flooring installers do
A flooring installer lays hardwood, engineered wood, tile, vinyl and carpet, and fixes the subfloor underneath so the new floor stays flat and quiet.
- Worn, damaged or dated floors.
- A kitchen, bath or basement renovation.
- Squeaks, soft spots or water damage under the floor.
Who licenses flooring installers on Long Island
- Floor and ceiling tiles appear on the state Department of Labor's list of building materials that might contain asbestos. Without an asbestos handling license, no construction trade may disturb or remove asbestos materials.
- The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule reaches flooring jobs: anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities or preschools built before 1978 must be certified.
Suffolk County
- Suffolk's home improvement law names flooring, along with carpentry, fencing, driveways and exterminating. A business the law regulates must get a license from the county's Office of Consumer Affairs unless it is exempt.
- The list of home improvement work posted by Suffolk Consumer Affairs includes flooring.
Nassau County
- Nassau's Who Must Be Licensed list from Consumer Affairs includes floor installation and refinishing, sub-floors among them.
- Nassau's Administrative Code names floor refinishing and carpet installation in its definition of home improvement.
- Nassau's home improvement license application has a Carpet Installation category and a Carpentry/Painting/Insulation/Flooring category.

What it costs
Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island floor layers, except carpet, wood and hard tiles earn a median $75,837 a year, from about $56,139 at entry level to $100,596 with experience. Tile and marble setters earn a median $62,316 a year, from about $43,807 at entry level to $73,357 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)
Flooring prices turn on the area, the material, removal of the old floor, subfloor repair and leveling, and stairs and transitions. See the flooring cost guide.
What to ask before you hire
- Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
- A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
- What condition is the subfloor in, and is leveling or repair in the price?
- Who moves furniture and removes the old floor?
- For a basement: which materials tolerate moisture there?
- How long before the floor can be used?
