Find a licensed generator installer on Long Island
What generator installers do
A generator installer sets a standby generator on a pad, connects it to the house through a transfer switch, and runs the fuel line, work that touches both the electrical and the gas or propane systems.
- Power outages that leave the house without heat, a sump pump or medical equipment.
- A portable generator you want to replace with a standby unit.
- A new heat pump or well pump that needs backup power.
Who licenses generator installers on Long Island
- New York's Division of Building Standards and Codes does not license generator installers: its FAQ says licensing of contractors or electricians is not handled by the division.
Suffolk County
- Suffolk County Consumer Affairs licenses the electricians who hook up standby generators, and Master Electrician and Restricted Electrical are both among its license types.
- Suffolk's home improvement law excludes work in the electrical and plumbing fields, so a home improvement license alone does not cover a generator's wiring.
- Natural Gas and LP Gas are both Restricted Plumbing categories on Suffolk's restricted license application.
Nassau County
- In Nassau, plumbers and electricians, including those who install standby generators, are licensed by the cities, towns and villages, county Consumer Affairs says.
- Nassau's home improvement license law does not reach a licensed electrician or plumber whose generator work stays within the scope of that trade license.
Step by step: how to check a generator installer's license in Suffolk or Nassau.
Town by town
Each town page quotes that town's own rules for standby generator installation, with the date we read them.
| Town or city | County | What the town says |
|---|---|---|
| Town of Oyster Bay | Nassau County | Oyster Bay generator permits need a survey with all setbacks and a Town-licensed electrician; propane units need county Fire Marshal approval. |
| City of Glen Cove | Nassau County | A generator in Glen Cove needs a City permit. |
| Town of Huntington | Suffolk County | A home generator in Huntington needs a Town plumbing permit. |
| Town of Smithtown | Suffolk County | Smithtown generator filings need a survey with distances to lot lines and structures, within accessory setbacks. |
| Town of Shelter Island | Suffolk County | Yard equipment such as generators may need its own Shelter Island permit and must meet setbacks. |
What it costs
Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island electricians earn a median $80,288 a year, from about $51,265 at entry level to $105,120 with experience. Plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters earn a median $80,988 a year, from about $55,904 at entry level to $110,956 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)
Generator prices turn on the size of the unit, the transfer switch, the distance to the gas meter or propane tank, the pad, and the permits. See the standby generators cost guide.
What to ask before you hire
- Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
- A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
- Who files the permits for the generator, the electrical work and the gas or propane line?
- Where can the generator sit under the town's setback rules, and how loud is it?
- Which circuits will it run, and is the transfer switch automatic?
- What maintenance does it need, and is a service plan included?
