What gutter installers do

A gutter installer replaces and repairs gutters, downspouts and guards, and sets the slope and the downspout outlets that carry roof water away from the foundation.

  • Gutters that overflow, sag or pull away from the fascia.
  • Water pooling against the foundation, or a wet basement after rain.
  • A new roof or siding job.

Who licenses gutter installers on Long Island

  • A business doing gutter or downspout services for a fee is a roofing contractor under section 770 of New York's General Business Law.

Suffolk County

  • Suffolk licenses gutter work through its home improvement law, which covers any repair or improvement to residential property, unless the contractor falls under an exemption.
  • Suffolk's published list of home improvement work leaves gutters off, yet Consumer Affairs calls home improvement a very broad term not limited to that list.

Nassau County

  • Nassau's home improvement definition takes in repair, replacement and additions to a home, so installing or replacing gutters as a business needs a county license.
  • Gutter cleaning is named in the home services definition of Nassau's Administrative Code, a definition that does not include work done by licensed home improvement contractors.

Step by step: how to check a gutter installer's license in Suffolk or Nassau.

Town by town

Each town page quotes that town's own rules for gutter work, with the date we read them.

Town or cityCountyWhat the town says
Town of RiverheadSuffolk CountyRiverhead holds property owners responsible for controlling stormwater that leaves their land for the street.
Town of SouthamptonSuffolk CountyIn Southampton, a property's surface and underground water must drain properly.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island sheet metal workers earn a median $76,442 a year, from about $49,684 at entry level to $99,030 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Gutter prices turn on the length of the roof edge, the material and size, the number of downspouts, guards, and repairs to the fascia behind them. See the gutters cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Where will the downspouts discharge, and how far from the foundation?
  • Seamless or sectional, and what size for this roof?
  • Is any fascia or trim repair included?
  • What do the guards, if any, cost to maintain?
