Find a licensed home security installer on Long Island
What home security installers do
Home security installers set up alarm systems, cameras, smart locks and sensors, and connect them to monitoring if you want it.
- A new alarm or camera system.
- An old system that no longer works.
- Smart locks, doorbells or sensors.
Who licenses home security installers on Long Island
- New York's Department of State licenses security and fire alarm installers: anyone who offers or undertakes to install, service or maintain a system that detects intrusion, break-in, movement, sound or fire. A license runs two years.
- Applicants for the state license must be 18, show proof of fingerprinting, pass an alarm installer examination and complete prescribed courses of four 15-hour modules and one 21-hour module.
- No license is needed when an owner personally installs an alarm system on their own property or place of business, or has an employee install it there.
- An electrician who installs security or fire alarm systems is licensed for that work through the Department of State's Division of Licensing Services.
Nassau County
- Nassau's Administrative Code leaves automatic fire alarm systems and burglar alarm systems out of its definition of home improvement.
- Installing smoke or carbon monoxide detectors is part of Nassau's definition of home services, and no one may run a home service business in the county without a license.
- Nassau's Administrative Code calls for a valid alarm permit issued by the police department, and under the current code the permit expires after two years.

| Town of Riverhead | Suffolk County | Riverhead homes with fire or security alarms are exempt from the town's alarm registration program. |
| Town of Southampton | Suffolk County | Southampton takes appeals of alarm charges through an online form. |
| Town of Shelter Island | Suffolk County | No town permit is needed for a home alarm system on Shelter Island. |
What it costs
Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island security and fire alarm systems installers earn a median $55,650 a year, from about $44,506 at entry level to $70,281 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)
Security system prices turn on the number of devices, wired or wireless, the installation, and the monitoring contract. See the home security and smart home cost guide.
What to ask before you hire
- Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
- A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
- Is your business licensed by New York State to install security systems?
- Who monitors the system, and what does the contract commit me to?
- Where will cameras point, and what do they record?
- What happens to the equipment if I cancel monitoring?
