What insulation contractors do

An insulation contractor seals air leaks and adds insulation in attics, walls, floors and basements, often after an energy audit shows where the house loses heat.

  • Drafty rooms, ice dams or high heating bills.
  • A switch to heat pumps, which work best in a tight house.
  • An attic or basement being finished.

Who licenses insulation contractors on Long Island

  • Pipe and boiler insulation is one of the examples the state Department of Labor gives of building materials that might contain asbestos.
  • Under 12 NYCRR Part 56, licensed asbestos contractors using certified asbestos workers must abate asbestos materials. The exception is an owner-occupied single-family home where the homeowner alone does the work.
  • Insulation work is home improvement under New York's General Business Law, whose section 770 lists insulation by name.

Suffolk County

  • Suffolk Consumer Affairs counts insulation as home improvement work, and contractors working without a license there are subject to arrest and prosecution.
  • Home Energy Audit Certificates are a separate license type issued through Suffolk Consumer Affairs.

Nassau County

  • Nassau's Department of Consumer Affairs licenses insulation contractors, who appear by name on its list of home improvement trades.

Step by step: how to check an insulation contractor's license in Suffolk or Nassau.

Town by town

Each town page quotes that town's own rules for insulation work, with the date we read them.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island insulation workers, floor, ceiling and wall earn a median $63,862 a year, from about $51,649 at entry level to $91,054 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Insulation prices turn on where it goes, how much air sealing comes first, the material and depth, and how hard the space is to reach. See the insulation cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Will you air seal before you insulate, and how will you test the result?
  • What material and how much, and how does that compare with the code for this part of the house?
  • How will you keep vents, recessed lights and the chimney safe?
  • Do any state or utility programs apply to this job?

Questions homeowners ask

Does insulation work need a license on Long Island?

Insulating a home is home improvement work, so the county home improvement license applies in Nassau and in Suffolk.

Should I insulate before switching to heat pumps?

Often yes: a tighter house needs a smaller system. A licensed contractor can size both after a visit.
