Find a vetted landscaper on Long Island
What landscapers do
Landscapers design, plant and maintain yards: lawns, beds, shrubs and trees, grading and drainage, and seasonal cleanups.
- A yard that needs regular mowing and care.
- New beds, plantings or a redesign.
- Drainage or grading problems in the yard.
Who licenses landscapers on Long Island
- A landscaper who applies any pesticide commercially must hold certification from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
- DEC requires a Business Registration for any business that offers, advertises or makes pesticide applications for hire, under rules in 6 NYCRR Part 325.
- DEC certification category 3A covers the maintenance and production of ornamental and shade trees, shrubs, flowers and turf, and category 3B covers turf, golf courses and disease control for aesthetic purposes.
Suffolk County
- Suffolk's home improvement law includes landscaping and arboriculture, which it defines as tree sprayers, pruners, stump removers and all other tree services. Businesses the law regulates need a county license unless exempt.
- Suffolk Consumer Affairs names landscapers, and arborists too, when it lists the work home improvement covers.
- Suffolk requires all licensed landscapers to take a fertilizer turf management course on the proper use of fertilizers and lawn care practices, and the class is needed one time only.
- Suffolk prohibits applying any fertilizer between November 1 and April 1, and violators may be fined up to $1000.
Nassau County
- Nassau's code treats gardening and landscaping as home improvement when the landscaper uses their own equipment in the business and their own vehicle to carry it, and a home improvement business needs a county license.
- Landscaping and shrub or tree pruning share one work category on Nassau's home improvement license application.
Step by step: how to check a landscaper's license in Suffolk or Nassau.
What it costs
Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island landscaping and groundskeeping workers earn a median $47,635 a year, from about $37,044 at entry level to $53,326 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)
Landscaping prices turn on the size of the yard, how often the crew comes, the plants and materials, and any grading or drainage work. See the landscaping and lawn care cost guide.
What to ask before you hire
- Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
- A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
- What is included in a visit, and how often?
- Who applies any fertilizer or pesticide, and are they certified to?
- For grading: where will water go, and does it affect the neighbors?
- What insurance covers your crew and my property?
