What oil tank removal companies do

An oil tank removal company empties, removes or abandons in place the heating oil tanks that many Long Island homes still have, buried or in the basement, and handles the paperwork the county or town asks for.

  • A switch from oil heat to gas or heat pumps.
  • A buried tank found during a sale, or a buyer or lender asking about one.
  • An old basement tank that leaks or weeps.

Who licenses oil tank removal companies on Long Island

  • Most home heating oil tanks fall outside New York's Petroleum Bulk Storage regulations because they hold less than 1,100 gallons, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
  • Tanks that store heating oil for use on the premises where it is stored are excluded from federal underground storage tank regulations. EPA adds that state or local agencies may regulate them.
  • DEC names Nassau and Suffolk among its three delegated counties, and it encourages residents there to ask the county Department of Health whether heating oil tanks under 1,100 gallons are regulated.
  • State law requires heating oil tanks, aboveground and underground, to be emptied, cleaned and purged of all vapors, DEC's homeowner guide says.
  • When an underground heating oil tank is removed, its vent line and fill line must be removed as well, or the fill line must be capped with concrete.
  • Contamination from a leaking tank must be reported to the state's Spills Hotline at 1-800-457-7362.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island hazardous materials removal workers earn a median $86,751 a year, from about $59,480 at entry level to $91,778 with experience. Construction laborers earn a median $58,875 a year, from about $39,468 at entry level to $79,154 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Tank removal prices turn on whether the tank is buried or in the basement, its size, how much oil is left in it, the permit, and whether testing finds a leak. See the oil tank removal cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Will you remove the tank or abandon it in place, and why?
  • Who files the permit or notice the county or town requires, and who inspects?
  • If soil testing finds oil, what happens next and how is it priced?
  • What paperwork do I get at the end, for a buyer or my insurer?
