What pest control companies do

Pest control companies inspect for and treat insects, termites and rodents, and seal the gaps that let pests in.

  • Termites, carpenter ants or wood damage.
  • Mice or rats in the house.
  • Bees, wasps or ticks around the yard.

Who licenses pest control companies on Long Island

  • New York's Department of Environmental Conservation certifies pest control applicators, and certification is required to apply any pesticide commercially.
  • To offer, advertise or make pesticide applications for hire, a pest control business needs a DEC Business Registration.
  • DEC category 7A covers controlling rodents, roaches, ants, fleas, ticks and stinging and biting insects in or associated with structures, excluding food processing areas and post construction wood destroying organisms.
  • Termite work has its own DEC category, 7C, for identifying and treating termite species.

Suffolk County

  • Suffolk's home improvement law names exterminating, and the law bars running a regulated business in the county without a license from its Office of Consumer Affairs, exemptions aside.
  • Suffolk Consumer Affairs treats exterminating, fumigation and termite control as home improvement work in its list of covered trades.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island pest control workers earn a median $51,082 a year, from about $43,307 at entry level to $63,065 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Pest control prices turn on the pest, the size of the house, one-time or ongoing service, and any repair or sealing work. See the pest control cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Is the technician a New York State certified applicator, and is the business registered?
  • Which products will you use, and what do I need to do before and after?
  • Is sealing entry points part of the plan?
  • What follow-up visits and guarantees are included?
