Find a licensed plumber on Long Island
Water coming in right now?
- Call now, 24/7: (631) 557-5869. Revival's AI line takes your details any time and flags the call as urgent.
- Shut off the main water valve if you can reach it, usually where the water line comes into the house.
- Keep away from water near outlets, cords or the electrical panel.
- Call a licensed plumber now, and your insurer if the damage is large. Revival is not an emergency service.
What plumbers do
A plumber installs and repairs the water supply, the drains and vents, fixtures and water heaters, and finds and fixes leaks.
- A leak, a burst pipe or a water heater that failed.
- A drain or sewer line that keeps backing up.
- New fixtures, a moved bathroom, or a kitchen with a new layout.
- Low water pressure or old supply pipes.
Who licenses plumbers on Long Island
- Local governments regulate the plumbing trade in New York under Article 4 of the General City Law. The state's Business Express site tells readers to contact their local plumbing board for licensing requirements.
- An exam is required to obtain a certificate of competency for the plumbing trade or business, the state says.
- Paid plumbing work that disturbs painted surfaces in a home built before 1978 is covered by the EPA lead rule, which requires the person doing it to be certified.
Suffolk County
- Suffolk Consumer Affairs issues plumbing licenses, and its license types include Master Plumbers and Restricted Plumbers.
- Only a member, officer, owner or partner of the business may apply for a Suffolk master plumbing license, the county's application says.
- Suffolk master plumbing applicants must document 7 of the last 10 years working for a licensed employer in the field, on forms signed and notarized by current or former employers.
- After the applicant passes the exams and the licensing board approves, Suffolk requires business insurance to be in place when the master license is issued.
- The Suffolk master plumbing application carries a non-refundable application fee of $200.00.
Nassau County
- Nassau County Consumer Affairs says plumbers who operate in the county are licensed by its cities, towns and villages.
- Nassau's home improvement license law does not apply to a plumber who must meet state or local competency standards, while acting only within the scope of that plumbing license.

Town by town
Each town page quotes that town's own rules for plumbing work, with the date we read them.
| Town or city | County | What the town says |
|---|---|---|
| Town of Hempstead | Nassau County | A mother-daughter second kitchen needs a Town plumbing permit for its fixtures. |
| Town of North Hempstead | Nassau County | Plumbing permits in North Hempstead come from the Town's Inspection Section, which also inspects the work. |
| Town of Oyster Bay | Nassau County | In most cases, plumbing fixtures need a permit in Oyster Bay. |
| City of Glen Cove | Nassau County | Glen Cove has its own Plumbing Permit Application, posted by the Building Department. |
| City of Long Beach | Nassau County | Every plumbing job in Long Beach needs a City permit. |
| Town of Babylon | Suffolk County | Installing, extending or legalizing plumbing in Babylon goes through the Town's Division of Plumbing. |
| Town of Huntington | Suffolk County | Huntington plumbing permits require the Town-licensed plumber's $1,000,000 liability policy naming the Town. |
| Town of Smithtown | Suffolk County | Smithtown plumbing-only permits need two notarized applications and the contractors' county license IDs. |
| Town of Riverhead | Suffolk County | Riverhead relies on an affidavit from a Suffolk County licensed plumbing contractor for the certificate of occupancy. |
| Town of Southampton | Suffolk County | Southampton plumbing permits need a Suffolk County plumbing license number and a supply riser diagram. |
What it costs
Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters earn a median $80,988 a year, from about $55,904 at entry level to $110,956 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)
Plumbing prices turn on access (open walls, finished ceilings, a crawl space), the age of the pipes, whether fixtures move, and the permit and inspections the job needs. See the plumbing cost guide.
What to ask before you hire
- Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
- A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
- Who files the plumbing permit, and who books the inspection?
- Does the price include opening and closing walls or floors, and who patches them?
- For a water heater: what size and fuel, and how is it vented?
- What warranty covers your labor, and what does the manufacturer cover?

Who licenses plumbers on Long Island?
Plumbing is licensed locally, not by New York State. Suffolk County and Nassau County each have their own rules, and some towns and cities add theirs. Each town page lists who licenses plumbers there.
Can a handyman do plumbing work?
Work that needs a plumbing permit usually has to be filed by a licensed plumber. Check the rule for your town or village before anyone opens a wall.
