Find a licensed roofer on Long Island
What roofers do
A roofer repairs and replaces roofs: the tear-off, the sheathing underneath, underlayment, flashing at chimneys, walls and valleys, vents and the gutters that carry water away.
- Shingles missing, curling or shedding granules after a storm.
- A leak at a chimney, skylight or valley, where flashing meets the roof.
- A roof near the end of its life, or an old second layer you want stripped.
- An insurer or a buyer asking how old the roof is.
Who licenses roofers on Long Island
- New York State's Division of Building Standards and Codes says the licensing of contractors is not handled by that division.
- The state Department of Labor lists roofing shingles and tars among building materials that may contain asbestos. A roofing contractor without an asbestos handling license is not permitted to disturb or remove asbestos materials.
- Federal rules require anyone paid for work that disturbs painted surfaces in a home built before 1978 to be certified under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule.
Suffolk County
- Suffolk County's home improvement law names roofing as home improvement work and makes it unlawful to run a business the law regulates without a county license, unless an exemption applies.
- Suffolk Consumer Affairs warns that unlicensed contractors are subject to arrest and prosecution for working without a license.
Nassau County
- Roofing contractors appear on Nassau County Consumer Affairs' list of who must be licensed.
- Under Nassau's Administrative Code, no one may run a home improvement business, or claim to be able to run one, without a county license.
- Nassau Consumer Affairs accepts only RRP lead certificates issued by an EPA-accredited training program.

Town by town
Each town page quotes that town's own rules for roofing work, with the date we read them.
| Town or city | County | What the town says |
|---|---|---|
| Town of Babylon | Suffolk County | In Babylon, a roof replacement that takes off the plywood needs a building permit. |
| Town of Smithtown | Suffolk County | Changing a Smithtown roofline, or adding gables or pitches, takes a permit; plain re-shingling does not. |
| Town of Southampton | Suffolk County | Replacing roofing material in Southampton generally needs no permit, outside village businesses and closely spaced buildings. |
| Town of Shelter Island | Suffolk County | Shelter Island lets owners file and pay for a roofing permit online. |
What it costs
Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island roofers earn a median $76,589 a year, from about $51,316 at entry level to $87,302 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)
Roof prices turn on the size and pitch of the roof, how many layers come off, the condition of the decking under them, the material, and how hard the roof is to reach. See the roofing cost guide.
What to ask before you hire
- Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
- A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
- Is the price for a tear-off or an overlay, and how many layers are on the roof now?
- What happens if the sheathing under the old roof is rotten, and how is that priced?
- Are underlayment, flashing, ventilation and disposal all written into the contract?
- What does the manufacturer's warranty cover, and what does your own workmanship warranty cover, in writing?
