What siding contractors do

A siding contractor replaces and repairs siding, the wrap and flashing behind it, and the trim around windows, doors and corners.

  • Cracked, warped or loose siding.
  • Peeling paint on wood siding that keeps coming back.
  • A remodel or new windows that disturb the siding.

Who licenses siding contractors on Long Island

  • Among the building materials that might contain asbestos, New York's Department of Labor names siding shingles.
  • State law requires an asbestos survey before all exterior renovation and repair work, re-siding included, the Department of Labor says.
  • If a siding job disturbs painted surfaces on a home built before 1978, the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule requires the paid contractor to be certified.
  • New York's General Business Law defines a roofing contractor to include anyone in the business of siding, gutter, downspout or roofing services for a fee.

Suffolk County

  • Suffolk's home improvement law lists siding by name, and a siding business needs a license from the county's Consumer Affairs office unless the law exempts it.
  • Suffolk Consumer Affairs also includes siding in its list of home improvement work.

Nassau County

  • Nassau's Department of Consumer Affairs requires a license for siding installation, one of the trades on its home improvement list.

Step by step: how to check a siding contractor's license in Suffolk or Nassau.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island carpenters earn a median $78,841 a year, from about $54,732 at entry level to $97,440 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Siding prices turn on the size of the house, the material, tear-off and disposal, repairs to the wall behind it, and the trim work. See the siding cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Will the old siding come off, and what is the plan for the sheathing and wrap behind it?
  • How will windows, doors and the roof edge be flashed?
  • For a house built before 1978: are you certified for lead-safe work?
  • What does the warranty cover, from the manufacturer and from you?
