What solar installers do

A solar installer designs and installs solar panels, inverters and the electrical connection to the house and the grid, and files for the permits and the utility interconnection.

  • High electric bills, or a new heat pump or EV charger that will raise them.
  • A roof replacement that is a natural time to add panels.
  • A battery for backup power during outages.

Who licenses solar installers on Long Island

  • Section 770 of New York's General Business Law names solar energy systems in its definition of home improvement.
  • NYSERDA says every contractor participating in its NY-Sun program is vetted by the agency, and contractors can also earn a NYSERDA Quality Solar Installer designation.

Suffolk County

  • In Suffolk, the electricians who wire solar systems get their licenses from county Consumer Affairs, which lists Master Electrician as a license type.
  • Suffolk carves the electrical field out of its home improvement law, so the wiring on a solar installation is not home improvement work there.

Nassau County

  • Nassau County Consumer Affairs puts solar panel installation on its list of who must be licensed for home improvement work.
  • The electrician on a Nassau solar installation is licensed by a city, town or village, because county Consumer Affairs says local governments there license electricians.

Step by step: how to check a solar installer's license in Suffolk or Nassau.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island solar photovoltaic installers earn a median $57,681 a year, from about $53,544 at entry level to $66,657 with experience. Electricians earn a median $80,288 a year, from about $51,265 at entry level to $105,120 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Solar prices turn on the size of the system, the roof, the equipment, the electrical work, and the incentives that apply when you sign. See the solar cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Is the roof in good enough shape to carry panels for their whole life, or should it be replaced first?
  • Who files the town permit and the utility interconnection, and how long do they take?
  • Are you quoting a purchase, a loan, a lease or a power purchase agreement, and what do I own at the end?
  • Which incentives does the price assume, and what if one does not come through?

Questions homeowners ask

Do I need a permit for solar panels on Long Island?

Generally yes: the town or village approves the installation, and the utility must approve the connection to the grid. The town pages below quote each town's rules.

Should I replace my roof before installing solar?

If the roof is near the end of its life, it usually makes sense to replace it first, since the panels have to come off for a later roof replacement.

How does Revival help with solar?

A free call to sort out the roof, the goals and the financing questions, then introductions to licensed installers as they join our network.
