What tree service companies do

A tree service prunes, removes and grinds out trees and stumps, and clears storm damage, work that is dangerous near houses and power lines.

  • A dead, leaning or storm-damaged tree near the house.
  • Branches over the roof, the driveway or wires.
  • Stumps to grind after a removal.

Who licenses tree service companies on Long Island

Suffolk County

  • Suffolk's home improvement law covers arboriculture, which it defines to mean tree sprayers, tree pruners, tree stump removers and all other tree services, and a county license is required unless an exemption applies.
  • On its licensing page, Suffolk Consumer Affairs includes arborists and tree services in the home improvement trades.

Nassau County

  • Nassau Consumer Affairs requires a county license for tree surgery, which appears on its home improvement list.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island tree trimmers and pruners earn a median $63,981 a year, from about $42,653 at entry level to $75,966 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Tree work prices turn on the size of the tree, how close it is to the house or wires, access for equipment, and cleanup and stump grinding. See the tree service cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Does my town or village require a permit to remove this tree?
  • What insurance covers damage to my house and the neighbors', and for workers on the job?
  • Is cleanup, wood removal and stump grinding in the price?
  • For branches near power lines: is the utility involved?
