What water damage repair companies do

A water damage repair company dries out a house after a leak or a flood, removes what cannot be saved, and rebuilds the walls, floors and finishes.

  • A burst pipe, an appliance leak or a roof leak.
  • Groundwater or storm flooding in a basement.
  • Water that soaked walls, floors or insulation before anyone found it.

Who licenses water damage repair companies on Long Island

  • If water damage has led to mold, anyone hired to assess and remediate more than 10 square feet of it must be a licensed mold professional, the state Department of Labor says.

Suffolk County

  • Suffolk's home improvement law reaches any repair, remodeling, alteration or improvement to residential property, and running a business it regulates without a county license is unlawful unless exempt.
  • Suffolk Consumer Affairs says its list of home improvement work includes but is not limited to the trades it names, such as waterproofing and weatherproofing.

Nassau County

  • Nassau's Administrative Code requires a county license for environmental hazard assessment or remediation. It defines that hazard as an indoor air quality violation under federal law caused by fire, flood, storm, chemical spills, dust, sewage, mold or other biological contaminants, not asbestos or lead.
  • Repair, maintenance, replacement and remodeling work are part of Nassau's definition of home improvement, which takes a county license to do as a business.
  • Nassau Consumer Affairs lists Environmental Hazard Remediation Providers and Technicians as a county license of its own, under section 21-31 of the code.
  • A new Nassau environmental hazard remediation provider license costs $1300.00, according to the county's fee list.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island construction laborers earn a median $58,875 a year, from about $39,468 at entry level to $79,154 with experience. Carpenters earn a median $78,841 a year, from about $54,732 at entry level to $97,440 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Water damage costs turn on how much was wet and for how long, what has to come out, what the rebuild involves, and what your insurance covers. See the water damage repair cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Will you take moisture readings before and after drying, and give them to me in writing?
  • If you find mold, who assesses it? In New York the assessor and the remediator on a mold job must be different companies.
  • Who handles the permit for rebuilding, if the town requires one?
  • What exactly am I signing about my insurance claim? Read it before you sign, and ask your insurer if you are unsure.

Questions homeowners ask

Who should I call first after water damage?

Stop the water first: a licensed plumber for a pipe, or a roofer for a roof leak. Then call your insurer, and photograph everything before anything is moved or thrown away.

Does water damage repair need a license on Long Island?

The rebuild is home improvement work, so the county home improvement license applies. Mold work needs separate New York State licenses.
