What water heater installers do

A water heater installer replaces tank and tankless water heaters, gas, electric or heat pump, with the venting, gas or electrical connection and safety valves each one needs.

  • No hot water, or a tank that leaks.
  • A water heater more than a decade old.
  • A switch from oil or gas to electric or heat pump.

Who licenses water heater installers on Long Island

  • On plumbing licenses, including those held by water heater installers, New York's Business Express site directs people to the local plumbing board for each area's requirements.

Suffolk County

  • For the plumbing on a water heater replacement, the Suffolk licenses are Master Plumber and Restricted Plumber, both issued by Consumer Affairs.
  • Suffolk's application for a restricted license offers LP Gas and Natural Gas categories within Restricted Plumbing.
  • A home improvement license does not cover the plumbing on a Suffolk water heater replacement, because the county's home improvement law excludes the plumbing field.

Nassau County

  • Nassau's cities, towns and villages, not the county, license the plumbers who install water heaters there, according to county Consumer Affairs.

Step by step: how to check a water heater installer's license in Suffolk or Nassau.

Each town page quotes that town's own rules for water heater replacement, with the date we read them.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters earn a median $80,988 a year, from about $55,904 at entry level to $110,956 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Water heater prices turn on the type and size, the fuel, venting and electrical or gas changes, and removal of the old tank. See the water heaters cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Does the replacement need a permit and an inspection, and who files it?
  • What size and type fits the house, and how is it vented?
  • Is the expansion tank, the relief valve and the drain pan included?
  • What do the warranties cover, from the manufacturer and from you?
