What window and door installers do

A window and door installer replaces windows, entry doors, patio doors and storm doors, from the frame and flashing to the trim inside and out.

  • Drafty, foggy or hard-to-open windows.
  • A door that sticks, leaks air or does not lock well.
  • A remodel or an addition that changes openings.

Who licenses window and door installers on Long Island

  • A window or door project that disturbs lead paint in a home built before 1978 must be done by a lead-safe certified contractor, the state Health Department says of the EPA rule.
  • Putties, caulks, paints and cements appear on the state Department of Labor's list of building materials that might contain asbestos.
  • New York's General Business Law lists the replacement or improvement of windows as home improvement in section 770.

Suffolk County

  • New windows and doors are an improvement to residential property, and Suffolk's home improvement law requires a county license for that work unless the business is exempt.
  • Storms and screens are among the areas of work Suffolk Consumer Affairs lists under home improvement.

Nassau County

  • On Nassau's home improvement licensing list, doors, windows and awnings share one entry.
  • Nassau's Administrative Code names windows in its home improvement definition, and the county bars anyone from running a home improvement business without a license.
  • A window or door contractor's RRP lead certificate counts with Nassau Consumer Affairs only if it was issued by an EPA-accredited training program under 40 CFR Part 745.225.

Step by step: how to check a window and door installer's license in Suffolk or Nassau.

Town by town

Each town page quotes that town's own rules for window and door replacement, with the date we read them.

Town of SouthamptonSuffolk CountyIn Southampton, a cracked window is not automatically a property maintenance code violation.

What it costs

Labor is a large part of any price. Long Island glaziers earn a median $63,302 a year, from about $51,418 at entry level to $84,282 with experience. Carpenters earn a median $78,841 a year, from about $54,732 at entry level to $97,440 with experience. (New York State Department of Labor, wages updated to the first quarter of 2026.)

Window and door prices turn on the number and size of openings, full-frame or insert installation, the material and glass, and any trim or siding repair. See the windows and doors cost guide.

What to ask before you hire

  • Your county license number, so I can check it before I sign?
  • A certificate of insurance sent to me by your insurer, not a photo?
  • Is this a full-frame replacement or an insert into the old frame?
  • How will the openings be flashed and sealed against water?
  • Does the job need a permit, for example if openings change size?
  • For a house built before 1978: are you certified for lead-safe work?
